Recommended Sodium daily intake for a toddler to an adult is 300 to 500 milligrams. It does not matter if the salt is sea salt or regular table salt. Salt is salt. The maximum salt intake for adults is 2400 milligrams, this about 1 teaspoon full.

Most American adults eat any were from 2 to 3 times this amount daily. Salt can be found in its highest quantity in all processed and cured meats. Most fast food is just out right loaded with salt. Take a look at the nutrition of the foods at the companies sites.

High salt intake will cause high blood pressure in most people. It will also cause water retention. Having high blood pressure will greatly increase your likely hood of having heart disease and/or having a stroke.

How to lower your salt intake

Buy all of your poultry, lean meat and fish fresh. No smoked or cured meats, that can have sodium nitrates in them. Sodium nitrates are believed to increase your cancer risk.

Buy all of your vegetables fresh or frozen. Read the labels, vegetables that are in sauces may have a lot of sodium added.

Any canned goods, read the labels and buy the no salt added ones.

Remember too that all most natural foods contain some salt. It all counts towards your daily maximum of 2400 milligrams.
