My wife is Thai and we travel to Thailand as often as possible. Even back in the US we eat mostly Thai food. But traveling to another country will definitely challenge your diet.
You really have to know what is put in the food when it is made. Thai’s love their fish sauce. Fish sauce in a nutshell is made from fish and salt. The sauce is really salty and fishy. But it is what makes a lot Thai dishes.
I hate to say, but a lot of Thai’s suffer from high blood pressure. I am sure that it has to do with their salt intake, along with the MSG’s that are used in their food preparation. My wife’s family is no exception to this either.
With all of the research that I have been doing on loosing weight, I have definitely read plenty of salt intake, and what it will do to you. My wife and I have cut way back on the fish sauce and never use MSG’s when we cook at home. But when we are in Thailand this can be somewhat of a challenge.
The food in Thailand is very cheep to buy and most Thai people will buy out rather than cook in. This is where you will get most of the salt. Even in my wife’s family’s home, it is almost impossible to get them to cut back on their salt or I should say fish sauce.
The point here is, when traveling to other cultures, you have to know what is used in the food preparation if you want to eat clean. It will not always be possible, but then you can cut back on your food intake to help in not eating too much of the things that you are trying to stay way from.
This is what I am doing here while I am in Thailand. It will be interesting to see what I end up weighing when we get back home.
